On 17th March 2026, the Ministry of Transport convened a high-level inter-ministerial meeting in Dodoma, Tanzania, bringing together the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Finance, Vice President’s Office (VPO), Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA), Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), and TAEMA to jointly discuss the registration of electric motorcycles and vehicles (EVs) currently operating without formal registration in the country. The meeting featured presentations from TAEMA, TRA, LATRA, and the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology, covering the current status of electric motorcycles and battery-powered vehicles, the challenge of EVs being classified as loose cargo during importation, regulatory and management gaps, road safety concerns, and government revenue implications. Deliberations focused on analysing these issues and developing recommendations for a more effective registration and regulatory framework. TAEMA actively participated in the discussions and remains committed to working with all relevant government institutions to build a clear and enabling environment that supports the growth of electric mobility in Tanzania.
